The Riflemen Union is a nationwide organization with its headquarters in Lithuania’s second-largest city Kaunas and regional units operating across Lithuania. It functions transparently under Lithuanian law and under the supervision of the Ministry of National Defense.
Membership is open to citizens of different ages and backgrounds, and the Union maintains close cooperation with the Armed Forces, Police, Fire & Rescue Service, and Border Guard. This democratic and voluntary structure ensures that the Riflemen Union remains accountable to the public and integrated into the state’s overall security and resilience framework.
Riflemen trained for armed resistance are prepared to defend Lithuania in wartime - they are fully integrated into the Lithuanian Armed Forces when needed, serving side by side with professional soldiers. Their expertise covers a wide range of modern defense capabilities, including drone operations, cyber defense, communications, logistics, engineering, and medical support. They form a vital part of Lithuania’s comprehensive defense system.
Unarmed resistance focuses on strengthening society’s resilience and supporting state institutions in times of crisis. Riflemen in this category contribute to disaster relief, evacuation, humanitarian aid, and civil protection tasks such as assisting the Police, Fire & Rescue, and Border Guard. They also play a role in countering disinformation, supporting psychological resilience, preserving historical memory, and providing cultural and educational initiatives. Their activities ensure that Lithuanian society remains strong, cohesive, and capable of withstanding both natural and man-made challenges.
The Riflemen Union places a strong emphasis on youth education and civic engagement. Young Riflemen, aged 11 to 18, participate in programs that teach survival skills, leadership, first aid, and civic responsibility. Through camps, hikes, and international exchanges, they gain practical knowledge, develop teamwork, and build a sense of patriotism. The youth program is designed to prepare future leaders who are resilient, community-minded, and committed to democratic values.
Lithuanian communities abroad also play an active role within the Riflemen Union. Diaspora riflemen act as ambassadors of Lithuania, supporting the country’s resilience and security both in times of peace and crisis. Their work includes countering hostile propaganda, representing Lithuanian interests in international settings, raising awareness about Lithuania’s defense efforts, and cooperating with NATO partners abroad. In this way, the global Lithuanian community contributes directly to strengthening national security and international solidarity.
